Ornans and its surrounding

Ornans and its  surrounding area was a genuine source of inspiration for the great painter Gustave Courbet. And as you explore the region you can understand why he found the place so charming.

The town of Ornans fully deserves its name of "Little Venice" and is full of attractions.

In addition to its typical bridges and canals Ornans is a lively place and a pleasant town to stroll around. It's not surprising that Gustave Courbet chose to stay where he was born. He spent years exploring the

Loue Valley and Lison Valley, painting the most beautiful spots there. Some of these paintings are on display in the Courbet Museum.

If you're looking for inspiration then follow the Courbet Footpath that he so often took himself.

Ornans is the ideal stopover when visiting Franche-Comté, being close to everything. Besançon, Dole, and the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans - three of the major tourist sites in the region – are only a few kilometres off, and it would be a shame to miss any of them.
