The citadel in Besançon

A day spent at the Citadel is bound to please all the family. There is something for everyone with historical, cultural, and fun visits.

Vauban’s Citadel, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, has stood high above the town of Besançon for centuries now. It has served to protect the town and its inhabitants down through the years. Nowadays it is open to the public and a source of pride for the local townsfolk.

The volumes created by Vauban would suffice for the Citadel to be a popular destination, but not content with that it also has other fine places for curious visitors to explore. Traces of the town’s past are to be found scattered here and there amongst its numerous buildings, including the Resistance and Deportation Museum for history lovers, the Musée Comtois to discover the culture of beautiful Franche-Comté, and the Muséum for those who want to find out a bit more about natural history.

New: multimedia spectacle

Discover all the secrets of the Citadel thanks to a new immersive spectacle. Where better to present the story of its history than on the walls of the fortress itself ?
