Besançon and surroundings / Jura Massif
all year round
“To paint a land, you must know it well. I know my land, and I paint it. This copse is my home, this river is the Loue, this one the Lison, these rocks are those of Ornans and the Puits Noir. Go and see them, you will recognise all my paintings there."
Visit the places that inspired the painter of this region, Gustave Courbet, the town of his birth, Ornans, his museum and the surrounding natural environment that harmoniusly blends cliffs, rivers, waterfalls... dive into the world of the painter.
Start your break with a visit to the Musée Courbet, in the heart of the town of Ornans.
A trail recalls his journey, from Ornans to Paris, the carreer of this local boy, the aesthetic rupture he brought about, the artistic milieux he frequented, as well as the political views he held up until his death in Switzerland.
This provides a total immersion into the painter’s world, with one visit at the Ferme Courbet in Flagey that was owned by Régis Courbet, the artist’s father. This entirely restored XVIII Century farmhouse provides 3 high-end 4 Epis guest rooms where period furniture and design come together perfectly, the « Café de Juliette » literary café, an exhibition space and artistic workshops.
The following day, set off in the footsteps of the artists thanks to the Courbet Trails. Five itineraries to choose from let you explore the sites he painted, taking you deep into his landscapes and his life, featuring springs, rocky outcrops, forests and stone buildings that all recount history.
